Castagna Maurizio 1961 - XL - Prima del Pensiero

Before Thought In Before Thought, Maurizio Castagna directs his search toward a territory where painting seems to precede the very intention of painting. The work does not arise from the execution of an image conceived in advance, but from the immediate surfacing of the gesture: sign, matter, and color determine one another on the surface, until an balance is built that appears instinctive and, precisely for this reason, surprisingly rigorous. The warm ground, dominated by ochre, sand, and earth tones, does not play a merely atmospheric function. It is an active painterly space, almost a wall worn by time, on which subsequent stratifications seem to settle like traces of a memory not yet deciphered. Castagna avoids the neutrality of a white background and chooses a surface already charged with temperature: a sort of primordial field from which the sign can emerge. Into this terrestrial dimension bursts black, used in different registers. Sometimes it is mass, sometimes line, drips, scratch or writing. In the large circular configuration on the left, the gesture takes on a centripetal and almost orbital movement; elsewhere the black thins until it becomes a nervous weave that traverses the surface and links its different polarities. It is not a contour and does not delimit shapes: it is a structural force. To this dark framework Castagna opposes an almost electric intensity of blue and azure, particularly incisive in the lower and central part of the composition. It is here that the work makes one of its most interesting chromatic steps: against the ancient temperature of ochre is opposed a cool, artificial, contemporary note. The blue does not harmonize the painting; it interrupts it. It introduces a visual fracture that prevents the surface from becoming tranquil. The flashes of red, pink, and magenta, used more sparingly, act as impulses. They do not build autonomous fields, but appear within the painting system as brief chromatic discharges. White finally takes on a decisive role: it is pause, light, and above all space. In the central area it allows the composition to breathe and, by contrast, accentuates the density of the peripheral masses. Thus, mixed media becomes an integral part of the meaning of the work. Broad brushstrokes, drips, overlays, abrasions, filiform marks, denser matter and sudden rarefactions attest to different speeds of execution. The surface preserves the time of the gesture rather than concealing it. Some marks seem to explode in immediacy; others appear settled or partially erased. The painting thus acquires a nearly archaeological quality, as if several phases of a single event had remained simultaneously visible. And it is precisely here that the title, Before Thought, finds its necessity. It does not allude to a lack of technical control, but rather to that infinitesimal fraction in which intuition precedes rational formulation. Castagna does not depict the unconscious: he lets the painting process itself suggest its existence. The large circular structure, the black trajectories, the chromatic masses, and the sudden openings do not seek to be translated into recognizable figures. They remain deliberately on the threshold between birth and definition. The artist’s biography helps to understand the confidence of this freedom. Trained at the Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti in Turin and active for over fifty years, Maurizio Castagna has undergone a long pictorial experience, moving from figurative and classical training toward a progressive emancipation of the image. Over the course of his career he has faced large-format works and commissions of a monumental character, including The Stoning of Saint Stephen, measuring about 3.50 × 2.20 meters, developing a physical relationship with the surface that continues to be perceptible even in his abstract production. His activity has also been documented in publications and art catalogs, including Bolaffi and Giorgio Mondadori. It is precisely the distance between that training and the current freedom of gesture that makes this phase of his research significant. Castagna does not seem to pursue abstraction as a simple abandonment of figure, but as a progressive liberation of tools acquired through decades of practice. Control does not vanish: it is internalized. Before Thought fully belongs to this maturity. The composition does not seek a stable center, but arises from the tension between different centers: the great circular movement on the left, the dense area in the upper right, the central luminous opening, and the blue-black force crossing the lower part. The eye is continually attracted, repelled, and drawn back into the canvas. From this emerges a work in which chaos and structure are not opposites, but two manifestations of the same impulse. What initially appears spontaneous reveals, as one continues to gaze, a complex network of weights, pauses, and correspondences. In this sense Before Thought does not tell of something that has already happened. It captures the moment in which something is about to happen: the moment when gesture precedes name, color precedes image, and painting, still free from the necessity to signify, becomes thought itself.
