Casket - Antique oak document chest - Oak

Beautifully crafted, compact antique document box or value chest made of dark oak, probably Dutch work from the 17th or 18th century. The front is richly decorated with two round medallions, surrounded by carved floral motifs, scrollwork and curling ornaments in a late Renaissance/Baroque style. The chest is fitted with heavy wrought-iron multi-band hinges, iron ring handles on the sides, and a keyhole on the front. The lid opens to a sober, spacious interior with a separately raised side compartment, originally suitable for deeds, documents, writing implements or small valuables. Due to its compact, sturdy construction and heavy hardware, this box is likely to have been used as a document box, archival chest or valuables chest. A characterful object with a handsome patina, suitable as a special piece of furniture, a storage chest or coffee table in a historic, rustic or eclectic interior.
