Candelabrum Paris matchbox - Bronze - Handmade

Interesting Napoléon III-style handheld candlestick, made of gilded brass and engraved during the second half of the 19th century, whose design combines functionality and mechanical ingenuity with the decorative refinement characteristic of French decorative arts of the period. The piece features a square tray with gently elevated corners and an integrated ergonomic handle, which allowed for safe transport during nighttime movements through the rooms of the house. The entire surface is lavishly ornamented with delicate engraving and chiseling, formed by interlaced vegetal motifs, arabesques, and geometric patterns with orientalist inspiration, a decorative language especially valued under the French Second Empire. The rich ornamental repertoire covers both the tray and the handle and the central support, creating a visually elegant effect against the warm tone of the brass. In the center rises the cylindrical candlestick holder, supported by a prismatic structure that hides one of the model’s most singular features: a compartment designed to house a small matchbox, enabling lighting and ignition in a single piece. This practical solution reflects the innovative spirit of the era and the attention given to everyday objects. The presence of a patent inscribed on the reverse, along with the reference to Paris, adds valuable historical and documentary interest, locating its origin in one of the main European centers of artistic and industrial production of the 19th century. This type of marking also evidences the patentable nature of the design, a feature relatively uncommon and highly prized by collectors of functional objects from the Napoleonic III period. Beyond its original utility, the candlestick constitutes a refined example of the eclectic French taste of the nineteenth century, where historicist and orientalist influences combine with innovative technical solutions. Its workmanship quality, its ingenious match compartment, and its Parisian provenance make it a particularly attractive piece for both antique lighting collectors and aficionados of the decorative arts of the Second Empire. Insured shipping and careful packing.
