C. Marko (XIX) - Paesaggio romantico con rovine, fiume e imbarcazione

Oil on canvas dated 1847 and signed at the bottom right “C. Marko.” The work can be traced to the famous dynasty of landscape painters of Hungarian origin active in Italy, linked to the name of Károly / Carlo Markó the Elder (1791–1860) and his son Carlo Markó the Younger (1822–1891). The dating of 1847 places the canvas at the moment of the full affirmation of the family school in Tuscany: a period in which both the progenitor and the son shared the same lyrical approach to landscape, the same idyllic-classical layout and the signing method entirely analogous, making this canvas an emblematic testimony of the unmistakable mid-19th-century Markó style. The composition extends along a tranquil basin of water, where in the foreground one sees a small boat with figures, rendered with swift and meticulous strokes. Dominating the scene is the imposing central rocky spur, at the summit of which stand the ruins of a fortified structure immersed in vegetation. The chromatic scheme plays on warm tones, earth shadow and natural ochres, with a clear, grazing light that well defines the volumes of the rocks and the different depths. From a conservation standpoint the painting is in good overall condition. The pictorial surface shows its original patina with a light and uniform age craquelure, an evident sign of authenticity and proper aging of the materials.
