There have been numerous collaborations between the Brand and The Voice, who has never hidden the fact that Bulova watches were his favorites. Not by chance, the Frank Sinatra Show was sponsored by the Brand and was known as “Bulova Watch Time.” A artistic partnership that the American Company realized in the Bulova Sinatra Collection, launched in 2020, which over the years has been enriched with numerous references. Initially inspired, in its name, by some of Sinatra’s immortal hits and, in its aesthetics, by models from the 1950s and ’60s often worn on the crooner’s wrist, the watches of the Bulova Sinatra Collection have evolved over time, while still keeping a mechanical heart that has carried through to today. With the latest extension of a collection that benefits from the collaboration of the Frank Sinatra Foundation. That Bulova has a close bond with the great American music of the second half of the last century is also confirmed by the watch dedicated to Tony Bennett. With Sinatra, however, the relationship is closer and longer. The new watch of the Frank Sinatra Collection echoes in its balanced and essential lines a historic model from 1967, called Banker C and as elegant as the famous Fedora hat that The Voice used to wear. As in the references of the previous collections, the inspiration here also comes from music: not so much from a song, but from a collection of tracks published in 2008, ten years after the artist’s death: Nothing But the Best. The steel case measures 37 mm in diameter and has a thickness of 10.25 mm. The shape is tonneau but the dial is round, as in the Banker G to which the watch is inspired. For this piece of the Bulova Sinatra Collection, the Maison conceived a double finish of the case, gold-tone or steel, with the buckle in the same tone. Of the two, the gold-toned one is, in my view, decidedly more interesting; working well on shape and finishes and on a balanced overall aesthetic, Bulova has managed to avoid a vintage or “grandpa’s watch” effect, giving this piece a contemporary and elegant look. Credit also to the dial, on which the most significant work was done and which, in effect, is the most interesting part of the entire watch. In the steel-colored version the dial is white, in the gold-colored version it is silver: but it is not so much the color choice that is significant as the workmanship. Bulova adopted the so-called crosshair dial type, widespread precisely in the 1950s and ’60s, rendered in a personal and original way. The crosshair dial was mainly distinguished by a central cross that divided it into four slices, as if it were a cake. Here, the cross is absent and the division into slices is achieved through alternating guilloché decoration, vertical in one sector and horizontal in the adjacent one. This way, the whole gains movement, elegance and depth. This depth is accentuated by the Fedora outline engraved in relief at 6 o’clock. A symbol of the singer who, in previous watches of the Bulova Sinatra Collection, we find printed. In terms of movement, Bulova has taken into account its vocation to create watches with a strong aesthetic impact and reliability, paired with an affordable price.
