Bruno FERT (Born in 1971) Majdal Yâba - N 32°04’51’’ E 34°57’24’’ 07.1948 The Absentees, 2016 Fine Art print on Hahnemühle Ultrasmooth paper, title and date inscribed in the margin 32 x 32 cm (40 x 50 cm) In 1948, the creation of the Jewish state triggered the first Arab-Israeli war and the exodus of more than 700,000 Palestinians to neighboring countries. What remains today of their towns and villages emptied of their inhabitants? It is to answer this question that I went to Israel: to locate and photograph the remnants of these phantom localities disappeared in the whirlwind of the 1948 war. This reportage is a journey through time; a visual quest to the origins of the refugee issue. These images bear witness to a key moment in the history of the region whose consequences are today at the heart of current events. Bruno Fert — Documentary photographer Bruno Fert develops a deeply humanist body of work devoted to exile, to migrations and to the traversed territories. From vanished Palestinian villages to the precarious shelters of migrants, he photographs less the event than its traces. With Passages, he continues this work along the routes of exile, revealing in the landscapes the marks left by those who try to reach Europe. A precise and silent photography, where the landscape becomes a bearer of memory.
