Bruno Fert (1971) - Feu. Méditerranée Centrale

Bruno FERT (Born in 1971) Deceased. Central Mediterranean, 2017 Fine Art print on Hahnemühle Ultrasmooth paper, title and date inscribed, signed in pencil in the margin 32 x 25.5 cm (40 x 50 cm) In the Mediterranean, off the Libyan coast, a boat is burning. It will disappear like thousands of lives devoured by the waves before reaching the lights of a better horizon. The sites I photograph lie on the routes used by the exiles who dream of Europe. There I search for the scars and traces left in the landscapes: a few pebbles gathered in a forest on the island of Samos testify to trajectories of lives brutally interrupted. Elsewhere, what remain are the remains of life jackets whose colors have been burnt by the sun, telling us of a grueling crossing. One can imagine silhouettes stepping down from a boat to seek shelter among the foliage, shedding the clues of their clandestine journey. Boats seized and numbered by border police rest motionless on the ground. Arrived in Italy, some write in charcoal fragments of their story on the walls of a deserted house in the village of Case Gina. Others, once past the barbed wire at the French border above Menton, discard their worn clothes. As our world grows prickly with barriers and walls, there appear as many breaches through which women and men pass or perish. Bruno Fert — Documentary Photographer Bruno Fert develops a deeply humanist body of work devoted to exile, to migrations and to the traversed territories. From vanished Palestinian villages to the precarious shelters of migrants, he photographs less the event than its traces. With Passages, he continues this work on the routes of exile, revealing in the landscapes the marks left by those who attempt to reach Europe. A precise and silent photograph, where the landscape becomes a bearer of memory."
