Bookends (2) - Marble, Spelter - Blacksmiths

Pair of bookends made during the first half of the 20th century in veined marble and patinated zinc metal, inspired by the historicist aesthetics of the Napoleonic III style and the nineteenth-century exaltation of artisanal trades. Each piece represents a blacksmith in full working, captured in a dynamic and expressive pose beside his anvil, holding the hammer aloft at the moment just before the strike. The composition turns a scene of everyday labor into a small narrative sculpture, evoking the 19th-century taste for allegorical representations of effort, industry, and mechanical arts. The figures, fused in zinc and finished with a dark metallic patina, stand out for the naturalistic modeling of workwear, aprons, and workshop tools. The anvils rest on blocks that visually reinforce the stability of the composition, while the marble bases add weight, chromatic contrast, and the necessary functionality for use as bookends. The balance between sculptural character and decorative utility fully responds to the French ornamental tradition of the late 19th century, reinterpreted in these serial productions from the first half of the 20th century. The ensemble possesses a strong decorative presence and is especially attractive for libraries, offices, and classical or eclectic-inspired environments, where the blacksmith iconography symbolizes manual dexterity, strength, and the nobility of artisanal work. A pair of elegant and evocative bookends that combine the solidity of marble with the expressive richness of patinated zinc, inheriting the ornamental spirit of Napoléon III and the historicist interest in traditional trades.
