Boch Belgium voor Royal Sphinx Holland – grote...

Boch Belgium for Royal Sphinx Holland – large Delft blue cabinet vase with lid and Foo Dog – 1969–1979 An impressive and richly decorated Delft blue cabinet vase with lid, manufactured by Boch in Belgium on commission for Royal Sphinx Holland. The vase combines a classical baluster form with exuberant blue-and-white floral motifs and is crowned by a striking three-dimensionally modelled Foo Dog / Chinese guardian lion on the lid. The body of the vase is divided around its circumference into large cartouches, filled with graceful blooming branches, leaves and bold peony-like flowers. These light fields are framed by deep cobalt-blue ornaments with scrolls, rosettes and other historicizing motifs. The strong contrast between the deep blue and the light creamware creates a particularly powerful decorative effect. The lid is equally elaborate. Around it are smaller floral cartouches and geometric patterns, while on top sits a three-dimensionally modelled guardian lion. Similar Boch/Royal Sphinx cabinet vases from this series were also produced with a similar Foo Dog finial and rich floral decoration. On the underside lies the clear factory mark: “Made for Royal Sphinx Holland by Boch – Delfts” This mark indicates that the piece was made by the Belgian ceramic factory Boch for Royal Sphinx in Maastricht. According to Delftsaardewerk.nl, this specific mark was used in the period 1969–1979. The material is described there as creamware with blue transfer decoration. The designation Delft refers to the Delft-inspired decorative style; the object was not produced in Delft. Boch has a long Belgian ceramic tradition. The factory originated in the 19th century in the vicinity of La Louvière; the Boch Frères company was formally founded in 1844 and over the following decades built an international reputation with faience and decorative earthenware. Royal Sphinx, in turn, belongs to the well-known Maastricht ceramic history. The Petrus Regout factories developed into one of the Netherlands’ leading industrial earthenware producers; from 1899 the company continued under the name De Sphinx.
