Beautiful antique French expandable telescope in very good condition, made of brass with a black leather handle. The telescope consists of several extendable parts and is equipped with the original brass lens cap. On the brass rim, the word “FRANCE” is clearly stamped. This is an interesting original provenance mark confirming that the telescope was manufactured in France. Comparable French brass telescopes with leather upholstery are typically dated to the late 19th / early 20th century, circa 1890–1910. This type of handheld telescope, also known as a spyglass or marine telescope, was used for distant observations, including at sea, during travel, and for general field use. Due to its retractable design, it could be stored compactly and then extended to full length for use. Similar specimens are also described as maritime telescopes. The piece is in particularly beautiful condition for its age. The leather has been well preserved and the brass has an attractive natural patina. A beautiful and decorative collectible now over a hundred years old.
