The waterhole takes its name from a small bird distinguished by its red and black colouring and distinctive call, which echoes the sound "piyurr, piyurr." Through this connection, the bird and waterhole share a name that reflects the close relationship between the natural environment, language and the naming of places within Country. Waterholes are important features of the Kimberley landscape, providing vital sources of water and sustaining the plants, animals and people who inhabit the region. They are also places of cultural knowledge and memory, connecting generations through their names, stories and associations.
