Between the Rain and the Sea by Gary Westall Painting 9.5 x 11.8 :: With the weather being very changeable I took advantage of a brief break in the rain to head out to the Houstrup dunes with my easel and paint on location. As I worked the weather kept changing. The break in the rain actually lasted until just before I finished the painting. I was particularly interested in the overgrown dunes that slope down toward the sea. The high cloud-filled sky occupies a large portion of the canvas and creates a strong contrast to the darker green of the dunes and the cool blue of the sea. My aim was not so much to reproduce a specific moment as accurately as possible. Rather I wanted to capture the special atmosphere of that brief window of time between two rain showers as well as the constantly changing colors and lighting conditions. Signed lower left.
