Bernardo Hay (1864–1931) - Paesaggio marino, Capri

BERNARDO HAY (Firenze, 1864 – Capri, 1931) Marine landscape, Capri Oil on canvas, 24 x 45 cm Signed ‘B. HAY’ at bottom right Frame size approx. 46 x 67 x 4 cm NOTE: Publication catalog of works from the Intermidiart collection. Signed work. Certificate of Guarantee and Legitimate Provenance. Work with a gilded and worked frame (defects). A prestigious work of notable artistic value, oil on canvas (24 × 45 cm), signed by the well-known painter Bernardo Hay (Florence, 1864 – Capri, 1931), an artist particularly appreciated for his landscapes and seascapes, linked to Neapolitan vedutismo. The painting depicts an evocative scene of fishermen on a beach along the Capri coast, with the distinctive Faraglioni in the background. The composition, luminous and harmonious, faithfully conveys the Mediterranean atmosphere and the daily life of the place, recurring themes in the artist’s production. Bernardo Hay specialized in landscape and marine painting, fully adhering to the Neapolitan vedutismo of the period. His canvases are characterized by a rich and brilliant palette, capable of capturing subtle variations of light and color, often through views painted in broad daylight, as in the present work. Born in Florence in 1864 to parents both painters, Hay learned the basics of painting at a young age within the family circle. He officially debuted at the XII Exhibition of the Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts “Salvator Rosa” in Naples, presenting Il mio primo studio and Studio dal vero. After a long stay in Venice, during which he produced numerous views of the canals and the lagoon, in 1891 he settled permanently in Capri, the island that became the main subject of his artistic output. He died there in 1931. Regarding the condition, the work presents generally decent preservation; the painting surface shows a patina consistent with age and highlights the thick, textural brushwork typical of the artist’s exuberant style. In the bottom right is the signature. The painting is adorned with a Sicilian gilded frame of great decorative effect (frame size approx. 46 x 67 x 4 cm, with defects). "The frame shown in the photos above has been added to the artwork by the seller or a third party. The frame is provided at no additional cost so that it is ready to display as soon as it arrives. The frame is included as a courtesy and is not considered an integral part of the artwork. Therefore, any potential damage to the frame that does not affect the artwork itself will not be accepted as a valid reason to open a claim or request order cancellation." PROVENANCE: Sicilian private collection PUBLICATION: - Unpublished; - I Miti e il Territorio nella Sicilia dalle mille culture. INEDITA QUADRERIA catalog of paintings from the cycle “I Miti e il territorio”, Publisher Lab_04, Marsala, 2026.
