Edition of 1839, original, of this rather uncommon philosophical essay, published by G. L. Bernard, former professor. Paperback, with the original rose-brown wrappers, adorned with a black typographic frame. Text paginated up to 85, followed by additional notes and a table of articles. An interesting treatise on natural philosophy and metaphysics, consisting of sixteen articles devoted to existence, creation, the nature of God, the origin of the universe, Providence, the immortality of the soul, and the independence of reason in theological questions. The author notably confronts the Indian, Chinese and Hebrew cosmogonies, discusses Leibniz’s monadology and Newton’s conceptions, and defends the freedom of philosophical inquiry. Copy preserved in its publisher’s binding, with printed covers, not trimmed. Wear and small tears to the covers and spine, scattered foxing, damp stains and marginal halos on several leaves. Confidential publication from the first half of the nineteenth century, of interest for the history of religious philosophy, cosmological conceptions and the relations between science and belief.
