Bernard Buffet (1928-1999) - French Village

"French Village" is a captivating original lithograph on Arches paper from 1975, associated with the celebrated French artist Bernard Buffet. Depicting the tranquil beauty of the French countryside, the composition reflects Buffet’s distinctive artistic language, bringing together bold, expressive lines, austere architectural forms, and evocative rural scenery. The result is a striking image characterized by its graphic precision, structural clarity, and unmistakable modernist sensibility. A particularly intriguing aspect of this work is its association with the distinctive signature “V. Beffa,” an alias documented in connection with Bernard Buffet. References to this signature appear in art-market records and documentation relating to certain prints, linking it to a particular facet of the artist’s printmaking practice. Its use has been associated with the commercial and publishing arrangements surrounding the artist’s work during that period, although the precise circumstances merit further documentary verification. Other works associated with the V. Beffa signature include Tournesols (Sunflowers, 1975), alongside French Village and a small number of other prints. This relatively uncommon signature adds an intriguing dimension to the study and appreciation of Buffet’s graphic work, offering collectors an opportunity to explore a less familiar aspect of his artistic legacy. The signature, edition details, publication records, and provenance are all important considerations when assessing a work of this nature. With its distinctive composition, disciplined architectural lines, and evocative portrayal of rural France, French Village offers a compelling insight into Buffet’s printmaking during the 1970s. Combined with the historical interest surrounding the V. Beffa signature, the work holds particular appeal for admirers of Bernard Buffet, collectors of modern French art, and enthusiasts of twentieth-century lithography.
