Belle Doxx - Goddamn

An original and unique work by Dutch contemporary artist Belle Doxx, where typography, humor and provocation come together in a direct and powerful image. On a soft pink background, the large black letters read “GOD DAMN.” The words almost fill the entire canvas, functioning at once as text, image and statement. The simple composition gives the utterance an almost iconic force. The work plays with the tension between religious language, everyday exclamation and cultural charge. As is often the case in Belle Doxx’s oeuvre, meaning arises precisely in the discomfort between seriousness and irony. The text can be read as astonishment, frustration, rebellion or a quick burst of emotion. The combination of the friendly pink field with the rough black letters creates a deliberate contrast. The visible paint texture and hand-painted forms preserve the raw, direct character that is characteristic of her work.
