Barigo Marine barometer - Brass, Glass - Model 1500 series

BARIGO marine ship’s barometer – brass – West Germany – 15 September 1981 Quite a beautiful and robust maritime precision instrument from BARIGO, housed in a heavy polished brass enclosure. This large mechanical ship’s barometer was produced in West Germany and has an aged original factory stamp on the inside, probably dated 15 SEP 1981. BARIGO belongs to the well-known German manufacturers of meteorological and nautical precision instruments. The company produced, among other things, high-quality barometers, thermometers, and ship clocks for both professional and private maritime use. This specimen belongs to the larger maritime versions of BARIGO and has a diameter of no less than about 18 cm. On the basis of the dimensions, construction, and BARIGO documentation from this period, it is probably a version from the Model 1500 series. The barometer is implemented as a fully mechanical aneroid barometer and requires no electricity or batteries. The clear white dial features two air pressure scales, shown in hPa/mbar and mmHg, and the classic weather indicators RAIN – CHANGE – FAIR. In addition to the black measuring pointer, the instrument has a separately adjustable gold-colored reference pointer. This allows the current reading to be marked, so it is easy to see whether the air pressure is rising or falling. The dial also bears the characteristic BARIGO logo, the designation COMPENSATED, and MADE IN GERMANY. Compensated refers to the temperature compensation of the mechanism, intended to reduce the influence of temperature differences on pressure measurement. Particularly beautiful is the construction of the case. The thick brass front is firmly attached to the rear housing with a sturdy metal hinge and can be opened completely. On the opposite side lies the characteristic rotating lock. This solid, almost porthole-like construction emphasizes the instrument’s original maritime character. The brass housing has a warm golden color and shows normal light patina with some signs of use and age appropriate to an authentic instrument of about 45 years old.
