[BARBAZAN (Étienne)]. *Le Castoiement, or A Father’s Instruction to His Son*. A moral work in verse, composed in the thirteenth century. Lausanne & available in Paris, Chaubert, Claude Hérissant, 1760. 2 parts in one in-8 volume, green long-grain morocco, gilt border around the covers, plain decorated spine, inner roulette, gilt edges (Bozérian jeune). First edition of this medieval didactic poem, which is none other than a translation of the *Disciplina clericalis* by the Aragonese theologian Peter Alphonsus. The work, published by the scholar Étienne Barbazan (1696–1770), teaches various ways of conducting oneself in the world and contains moral and historical poems. It includes an interesting “Dissertation on the Language of the Celts or Gauls, on the Language of the Swiss,” and “New Observations on Etymologies.” Tale XI, “Of the Man Who Locked His Wife in a Tor” (pp. 71 ff.), is said to have inspired Molière in writing *George Dandin* (see *Œuvres de Molière*, by Despois and Mesnard, vol. VI, 1881, pp. 483–487). Fresh binding signed by Bozérian. The bookbinder signed the binding upside down at the bottom of the spine. From the Raoul-Édouard Cartier Library (1974, no. 171). A few pinholes; some pages soiled at the margins.
