It is no coincidence that the period between the French Revolution and the First World War is referred to as the "long 19th century", and only the years after 1918 are seen as part of something different, something new. A deep caesura had not only separated those eras politically and socially, but also transformed the arts: In fashionable circles, the soft, floral forms of the Belle Époque were considered passé, as was yellow gold as a decorative metal. Instead, the emphasis was on lines, geometric rigor and formal abstraction as well as the effect of the non-colors black and white. In search of a new aesthetic, jewelry makers explored not only the beauty of cool geometry, but also combinations of gemstones never seen before. This pendant is an example of this modern jewelry art, contrasting light blue aquamarine with black onyx and fine diamonds. The aquamarine has been cut into a faceted oval and sparkles in a simple platinum frame. Black onyxes are set to the left and right above and below, shaped in an unusual rectangular cut that looks like dark struts against a shimmering white background. The pendant is made of white gold, a precious metal alloy that was still new at the time - it was only patented in the 1910s. A layer of platinum is applied to the front. We have added a fine but durable platinum chain to the pendant, which we found here in Berlin.
