JUAN GRIS, ERICH HECKEL, EMILD NOLDE, FERNAND LEGER, RAFFAEL, | XL Convolute of documents and photos from the former Pudelko Gallery in Bonn (1980) Large, only roughly browsed bundle full of surprises - about 1 kilogram - from the former archive of the Pudelko Gallery in Bonn. The bundle includes, among other items, gallery correspondence, handwritten manuscripts, as well as a large number of unique artwork photos of key modernists, such as The material dates from roughly 1940 to 1990. The bundle includes, among others: - Original documents from the year 1989 that provide a fascinating insight into the international art market with high-priced paintings by French impressionists. Three photographs are included. The focus is on four works by prominent French 19th-century artists: Berthe Morisot: “Jeune Fille en Blanc” – 1,650,000 DM Auguste Renoir: “Nature Morte aux Pêches” – 1,500,000 DM Armand Guillaumin: “Épinay-sur-Orge” – 450,000 DM Alfred Sisley: “La Passerelle du Chemin de Fer à Sèvres” – 1,850,000 DM Total demand: 5,450,000 DM. Particularly noteworthy is the 1879 painting by Alfred Sisley (oil on canvas, ca. 38 x 56 cm). It had already been offered on the international art market in April 1989 and is today in the Pola Museum of Art in Hakone, Japan. A later market history can also be traced for Berthe Morisot’s “Jeune Fille en Blanc” (probably “Isabelle Lemonnier,” 1886). The attribution of the Renoir and Guillaumin works requires further research. An exceptional documentary artifact of the international art market on the eve of German reunification. - Willi Baumeister, Monturi-Kreis. Rare original work photo, vintage print from the 1980s on Agfachrome color film, from the former stock of the Pudelko Gallery in Bonn. The original painting was resold at auction in 2008. Its current whereabouts are unknown. Willi Baumeister (1889–1955) is one of the most important representatives of German abstract art. After studying with Adolf Hölzel, he developed an autonomous visual language from geometric forms, archaic signs, and abstracted figures. In 1928 he became a professor at the Städelschule in Frankfurt, but lost his position in 1933 under the Nazis. After 1945 he helped shape Germany’s artistic new beginning. His main work published in 1947, “Das Unbekannte in der Kunst,” became an important theoretical foundation of postwar modernism. His best-known series include the Wall paintings, Eidos-pictures, and Montaru compositions. - handwritten letter by the Australian-French artist Karen Papacek (*1958). The drawing on the letter is also probably by her. Translated, the text reads: Dear Christophe, thank you very much for your birthday wishes so long ago. We had a very turbulent year with Hannah. The period between 17 and 18 was very difficult. Now she is in Paris and studies at the Sorbonne with a focus on film. She loves the city – no wonder after she spent so long in the countryside. I continue to teach and work in my studio. This here is a picture from a new book. Richard is well, after we endured some serious scare moments regarding his health. Life in Normandy remains beautiful, and we are lucky to own our own house and studios in this time of crisis. I hope you are well and enjoying life. I think of you very often, but write rarely. I send you my love and hope we can meet again soon in Paris. With a hug / All my love Karen Karen Papacek lives in Normandy and is an artist and art teacher. The commune of La Perrière describes her explicitly as a painter, sculptor, writer, and teacher, as well as a co-founder and head of the Art school Art en Liberté in Bellême. Her partner is the painter Richard Harper. This very Richard Harper lives with his wife Karen on an old farm in the Perche in Normandy. In an interview he explicitly calls Karen his wife and his “great inspiration.” The regional magazine Pays du Perche also lists them together as “Karen Papacek et Richard Harper.” The daughter mentioned in the letter, Hannah, is fully Hannah Papacek Harper and is today a filmmaker. Her own biography confirms exactly what the letter states: she studied film at the Sorbonne Panthéon in Paris and subsequently at the University of Lima. More precisely: her LinkedIn résumé lists for Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne the years 2012–2015. - rare historical art photographs of works by Auguste Herbin (1882–1960) from the former stock of the Pudelko Gallery in Bonn. Polaroids, color photographs, and color film shots, backside with precise details about the artworks. Some of the documented paintings were originally owned by the important Paris dealer Léonce Rosenberg; others were acquired directly from the artist. The current whereabouts of the original works are unknown. Auguste Herbin is one of the prominent representatives of classical modernism and geometric abstraction. After beginnings in Impressionism, Fauvism, and Cubism, he developed an autonomous visual language of geometric forms and luminous colors. In 1931 he was among the founders of the artist group Abstraction-Création. From 1946 he developed his famous alphabet plastique, a system of colors, shapes, and letters. Herbin was represented at the 1955 and 1959 documenta in Kassel. His works have been exhibited internationally in major museums, most recently in 2024 in Paris and in 2025 in the Lenbachhaus in Munich. - Convolute with exhibition material of the American artist Jerry Williams (1943–2021), including several items present in multiple copies. Williams studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and since 1965 developed his characteristic box-format artworks. Later he moved to Sweden, founded the Box Art Museum there, and engaged in animation art. Between 1969 and 2017 he participated in around 50 group and 15 solo exhibitions in Europe and the USA. His works are in the DeCordova Museum in Massachusetts and in Trollhättan Konsthall in Sweden, among others. - Invitation to the 1980 exhibition Accrochage of the Berlin gallery Georg Nothelfer. Rare. From the former archive of the Pudelko Gallery in Bonn. Marginally browned at the edges. “Accrochage” This is a French art term roughly meaning hanging/together of artworks. In galleries it often denotes a group show or a presentation of various artists from the gallery program. At the bottom is listed many artist names, including clearly readable: Christo, K. F. Dahmen, Lothar Fischer, Hellmut Middendorf, Max Neumann, Markus Prachensky, Dieter Roth, Walter Stöhrer, Antoni Tàpies, Fred Thieler, Wolfgang Troschke, Jan Voss. In short: a Berlin gallery flyer from 1980 for a group exhibition of contemporary art. - Book: Philipp Reisdorf, a painter from Cologne and prospects of the artists Lisa Kreitmeir and Fabula.
