Asmat - Papua New Guinea

Beautiful ritual Asmat food bowl. Carved by Opokon from Omandesep in 1969. Collected by Jac Hoogerbrugge and directly from his collection. Opokon was a very famous carver, who, because he was bedridden at home due to a paralyzed leg, managed to achieve a high level of technical perfection. The bowl is depicted in the booklet Asmat Art following the exhibition 70 years of Asmat woodcarving at the Ethnographic Museum Justinus van Nassau in Breda. Probably the bowl in question was also exhibited there. The book is included with the bowl. The book also contains a photograph of Opokon.
