Asie – Sculpture de Chien de Fo (Gardien du temple) en...

Asia – Sculpture of a Foo Dog (Guardian of the temple) in reconstructed stone and polychrome stucco, gilded and red lacquered – 19th / Early 20th century Magnificent and robust sculpture representing a Foo Dog (or Buddhist guardian lion), traditionally placed to watch over and protect sacred places or homes. The animal is depicted standing in a dynamic pose on an architectural rectangular base imitating a pedestal or an stack of sacred books, with one paw resting on a small cub playing with a sacred pearl. The head is finely carved with a mane featuring characteristic spiral curls, a gaping jaw expressing power and protection. Material & Finish Material: Reconstructed stone (or stucco / heavy composition based on stone powder and traditional binder), offering exceptional density and weight of over 2.2 kg for a compact size. Polychromy: Superb antique patina combining traditional vermilion red, gilded highlights, and dark/bronzed nuances on the body and mane. Technical characteristics Dimensions: Height 14.8 cm, width 10 cm, length 14.5 cm. Weight: 2.239 kg. Overall condition: Good general preservation with an authentic age patina. Wear: Wear to the polychromy and gilding in places (notably on edges and reliefs), which enhances its antique charm and authenticity. Base: Original rough underside, stable and heavy. No major structural crack compromising the object's solidity.
