This extraordinary piece of furniture perfectly embodies the glamour and sculptural taste of the 1960s and 1970s, an era when natural onyx became an iconic style element in the living rooms of Italian and European high society. The work stands out for the fascinating contrast in craftsmanship: the inner basin is finely carved and mirror-sanded to enhance the transparency and the spectacular concentric veining of the stone, while the outer edges intentionally retain the rough texture (live edge) and the natural crust of the primordial mineral. Onyx is not a common marble, but a semi-precious siliceous sedimentary stone famous since antiquity for its partial translucency and the complex mineral growth layers. In this specific specimen, the color ranges from aqua-green and emerald green to honey, amber and rust stripes caused by iron oxide inclusions. In the years of the economic boom, objects of these proportions were handmade by master craftsmen and were considered true symbols of social status and refinement. Period pieces in onyx of this kind rarely exceed 10-15 centimeters in diameter. This lot represents an exceptional rarity on the collecting market precisely for its extraordinary size and monumental weight: • Weight: a full 4.100 kg (4.1 kg) of solid stone. The item is completely original and presents in good vintage condition relative to its age and the intrinsic delicacy of the material. It certainly needs cleaning and, if desired, polishing. Given the fragile nature and the exceptional weight of the lot, a top-level logistical treatment is guaranteed: Custom packing: it will be wrapped in multiple layers of bubble wrap and placed in a quality box.
