Architectural ornament - Grote rechthoekige rustieke...

Decorative cast-iron doormat – richly openwork flower and scroll motif – classical style A particularly decorative and heavily crafted cast-iron doormat, featuring a richly openwork pattern with graceful scrolls, leaves and a central flower motif. The symmetric ornament gives the mat a pronounced classical appearance and makes it not only practical but also a beautiful architectural element at a front door, veranda, conservatory or entrance. The mat is completely made of cast iron. This material was traditionally used for door and shoe cleaners because it is heavy, dimensionally stable and suitable for outdoor use. In the 18th and especially the 19th century, cast-iron shoe cleaners and entrance elements were widely used at English town and country houses; with the casting technique both highly functional and richly decorated designs could be produced. The openwork design also has a practical function: sand, dirt and other debris can fall through the pattern instead of remaining on top of the mat. The raised, sturdy cast-iron structure can also be used to wipe shoe soles on arrival. The ornament is built around a central rosette, from which tendrils, stylized leaves and curling forms spread across the rectangular surface in a nearly mirror image. This kind of decorative ironwork strongly aligns with the ornamentation that became popular in the 19th century for architectural wrought iron. Cast iron made it possible to execute complex patterns in relatively detailed and robust fashion using molds. The naturally developed brown-rust patina reinforces the rugged character and gives the whole a pleasing weathered look.
