Antique Ring With Sapphire & Diamonds, Circa 1905 & Later

At the center of this ring is a radiant sapphire in a sparkling bed of diamonds. The stone has an intense, royal blue colour. It is cut in the so-called antique shape, a rectangle with rounded corners that defines the shape of the ring. Around the ring, 32 brilliant-cut diamonds sparkle. Hand-cut ornaments complement the light of the gemstones with an elegant play of shadows. The silver ring face is held in place by a lower band and a rose gold ring band. The ring band tapers slightly at the base of the ring face, making the showpiece appear to float above the finger. This is a typical design idea from the turn of the century, as is the ring's combination of silver and gold. Only the modern brilliant-cut diamonds do not date from this period: they were set into the ring in later years, probably to replace less sparkling stones. Rings like this were also called dinner rings at the beginning of the 20th century, as the lady would take off her gloves for dinner and present her richly adorned hands.
