Antieke tabakskist met sleutel – hout

Antique tobacco chest with key – wood, brass fittings and metal TABAK plaque – ca. 1900–1920 A particularly fine antique tobacco chest from the early 20th century, executed in darkly finished wood, presumably oak, and richly equipped with decorative brass fittings. Centrally on the lid is the original metal plaque with the inscription “TABAK,” making the original function of the chest immediately recognizable. The sturdy rectangular chest features a nicely developed warm brown patina. The corners of the lid and the cabinet are finished with beautiful openwork brass fittings. The recurring cross/circle motif gives the whole a pronounced late 19th-/early 20th-century look, fitting the Arts & Crafts and Edwardian tastes of that period. Such lockable wooden tobacco boxes or tobacco caddies were used for storing loose tobacco and smoking wares. Comparable items from around 1895–1900 are known in oak, fitted with brass mounts, a hinged lid and a lockable latch with key. For example, Christie’s documents an oak and brass-mounted tobacco box from circa 1895, while BADA describes a more luxurious oak tobacco box with brass corner fittings and lockable latch. An attractive detail is the original key, still present. The lock functions and the chest can actually be closed. The interior is simple and functional, as befits a utilitarian object for storing tobacco. Due to the combination of the wood, the brass corner pieces, the old fittings and especially the large metal TABAK plaque, this is not only a utilitarian object from the past but also a particularly decorative piece for a tobacciana collection, a cabinet, a gentleman’s room or a classical interior.
