Antiek houten theekistje met binnendeksels – ‘Thé’ –...

Antique wooden tea caddy with inner lids – ‘Thé’ – second half of the 19th century A refined box from the era when tea was kept with care. This charming wooden tea caddy combines a sober, almost square form with warm brown wood tones and subtle decorative details. On the lid is the graceful inscription ‘Thé’, framed by a fine, contrasting outline. On the front there is a keyhole with a light-colored oval surround. The visible grain of the wood and the well-worn finish give the box a warm appearance. Inside lies a special feature: two loose inner lids, one with a light-colored knob and one with a dark knob. The light wood color on the inside of the outer lid forms a handsome contrast to the dark exterior. A tangible reminder of tea culture Tea was a valuable product for a long time. Tea caddies protected the supply and were often fitted with a lock. Inner lids helped to shield the contents further. This example fits the tradition of nineteenth-century tea caddies. The probable dating is the second half of the nineteenth century, circa 1850–1900. The French word ‘Thé’ adds an elegant continental accent.
