Antiek houten dienblad - Tray - Wood - kerf-cut serving tray

Antique hand-carved wooden presentation tray – rich kerf-cut work – floral edge – ca. 1900–1930 A particularly decorative antique wooden presentation tray, fully executed with rich hand-carved ornamentation. The large oval tray is framed by an openworked edge with bold leaves and tendrils, while the central panel features a striking geometric relief and a large stylized leaf motif. The decorative technique clearly aligns with kerf-cutting / chip carving: a traditional form of wood carving in which small portions of the surface are cut away to create geometric patterns, relief, and a strong light-dark effect. This technique was widely applied in North- and Central European folk art and experienced renewed popularity around the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The center is particularly beautifully formed. Around the large central leaf motif lies a dense pattern of individually cut kerfs, making the surface look almost woven. The dark brown finish contrasts beautifully with the lighter wood tone visible on the higher parts and along the cutting surfaces. Around it is a sculptural openworked edge with large leaf ornaments. This kind of combination of geometric kerf-cutting and natural leaf motifs also occurs on European and so-called Black Forest style wooden serving and presentation trays from the first half of the 20th century. Without a mark or documented provenance I consciously do not assign this piece to a specific workshop or region. At the bottom the tray is fitted with a wooden reinforcement bar and small feet, causing it to sit slightly elevated on the table. Characteristics * Object: antique presentation tray / decorative plateau * Dating: presumably ca. 1900–1930 * Material: wood * Technique: hand-carved kerf-cutting / chip carving and openworked wood carving * Shape: large oval plateau * Central stylized leaf motif * Dense geometric kerf pattern * Richly carved floral outer edge * Dark finished wood with warm visible wood tones * Elevated model with small feet * European folk art appearance Condition The presentation tray is in a well-worn antique condition. There are damages and missing pieces of wood visible on several parts of the richly carved outer edge, especially on some protruding leaf shapes and corners. In addition there are signs of use, wear of the dark finish, scratches, small damages and signs of aging. These points have been deliberately photographed clearly and are part of the condition of the object. Usage marks and damages can be seen in the photos. Despite the signs of use, the extensive hand-carved decoration makes this a particularly attractive object, suitable as a decorative tray, a tabletop piece, or wall decoration within a classic, country, folk-art, or eclectic interior. Dimensions: Length 50.5 cm Width 39 cm Height 4 cm The photos give a clear impression of the quality and are part of the description. The interior photos have been AI-generated and are intended solely to illustrate the object in a living environment.
