Born in Eberbach, Germany, he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Albert Oehlen, whose influence is associated with a broader questioning of conventional painting. Based in Düsseldorf, Breunig creates complex compositions that explore the relationship between image-making, abstraction and the possibilities of the painted surface. His S-Works: Specialized series, developed during the 2010s, comprises paintings executed using oil, charcoal and graphite on canvas.
