Ancient Rome Bone (Astragalus) Dice

A die from Ancient Rome made of bone (astragalus), set in a removable spiral of silver-plated metal to easily extract/insert the die. It is linked to a modern chain-type necklace in 925 silver. In Ancient Rome dice games occupied a fascinating and ubiquitous place throughout society, from the highest spheres to the humblest taverns. The act of playing dice was known as alea; from this word comes the famous phrase attributed to Julius Caesar when crossing the Rubicon, "Alea iacta est" — The die is cast. To prevent cheating, Romans used wooden or leather cups called fritillus to shake and cast the dice onto boards or tables. An elegant historical jewel that blends the classical world with the modern world. It ships with a legal declaration sheet. Customs charges outside the EU will be borne by the auction winner.
