Ancient Roman Theatre Ticket of Emperor Vitellius Roman Empire, AD 69 Terracotta Tessera Weight: 2.0 g Dimensions: 20.9 × 18.5 × 4.9 mm From a Private European Collection. An outstanding and historically fascinating Roman terracotta theatre admission tessera bearing the portrait of Emperor Vitellius, one of the four emperors who ruled Rome during the turbulent year of AD 69. The small terracotta token bears a remarkably expressive laureate imperial portrait facing right, impressed deeply into the clay. Despite its diminutive size, the portrait retains excellent detail, with the facial features, hair, laurel wreath and powerful profile clearly visible. The irregular shape and plain reverse are characteristic of the simple and economical production of terracotta tesserae: a prepared piece of clay could be impressed with a reusable die or seal and produced efficiently in considerable numbers. A Ticket to Entertainment in Ancient Rome: Public entertainment occupied an extraordinary place in Roman society. Theatres, amphitheatres, circuses and other spectacles attracted enormous audiences and brought together people from virtually every level of Roman society. The Romans used tesserae as tokens serving a variety of functions, including admission and identification. Particularly fascinating are terracotta examples associated with admission to public spectacles. Clay was inexpensive, readily available and ideally suited to the rapid production of large quantities of tokens. Unlike a modern numbered ticket, such a tessera did not necessarily need to identify an individual seat. Its primary purpose could simply have been to demonstrate the holder's right of admission to a particular spectacle or designated area. This tiny object therefore provides a remarkable and very personal connection to Roman everyday life: almost two thousand years ago, it could have been held in the hand of a spectator approaching a Roman venue to witness the entertainment of the day. Vitellius – Emperor for only Eight Months: The portrait makes the piece particularly fascinating. Aulus Vitellius became emperor during the legendary Year of the Four Emperors, AD 69, one of the most dramatic years in Roman imperial history. Following Nero's death in AD 68, the Roman world descended into a violent struggle for imperial power. Galba was succeeded by Otho, who in turn was defeated by the forces of Vitellius. Proclaimed emperor by his troops, Vitellius entered Rome and was recognized as emperor during the summer of AD 69. His triumph was remarkably short-lived. In the eastern provinces, the legions proclaimed Vespasian emperor. As Vespasian's forces advanced upon Italy, Vitellius rapidly lost control. Rome itself became a battlefield and in December AD 69 Vitellius was captured and killed. His reign had lasted only approximately eight months. The Flavian dynasty of Vespasian subsequently emerged from the chaos, bringing the extraordinary Year of the Four Emperors to an end. A Rare Survivor of Roman Daily Life: Objects connected with famous emperors are usually coins, sculptures or official inscriptions. This piece is fundamentally different. It belongs to the world of ordinary Roman life and public entertainment – a humble object of baked clay carrying the portrait of an emperor whose reign lasted for only a few months. Its survival is particularly remarkable considering the fragile material and utilitarian nature of such tokens. The well-preserved imperial portrait, attractive reddish terracotta fabric and surviving original irregular edges give the piece considerable character. A fascinating combination of Roman imperial history and everyday life: - A ticket to a Roman spectacle. - The portrait of an emperor who ruled for only eight months. - A small but evocative survivor from the extraordinary Year of the Four Emperors. Extremely rare and highly attractive collector's piece. I prove that the lot was obtained legally , provenance statement seen by Catawiki Important information.
