Ancient Roman Empire Glass Globular Flask with Funnel Neck

Roman, Imperial period, likely Judea. A free-blown glass flask with a nearly spherical body and a tall funnel neck that widens from a narrow throat to a broad mouth. The rim is folded to form a doubled collar. The glass is the pale green-blue typical of Roman production, which used natron and sand, and the thin walls carry silvery-white weathering with patches of iridescence and burial deposits. Flasks of this shape held oils, perfumes, and other liquids for household and personal use, and they are also found in tomb groups. Glassblowing was invented in the Syro-Palestinian region around the middle of the 1st century BCE. Within a few generations the technique had turned glass from a luxury into an everyday material across the Roman Empire. Workshops along the Levantine coast and inland in Judea and Galilee stayed among the most productive centers. Thin-walled bottles and flasks with globular bodies and funnel or trumpet necks were among their standard products. Item # 205181
