Ancient Roman Bronze Equites Cavalry Horse Harness Junction with Bull's Head Roman Imperial Period, circa 1st–3rd century AD Material: Bronze Weight: 64.2 g Dimensions: 58.2 × 58.2 mm Smallest Ring: 30.5 mm (external diameter) From a Private European Collection. A very rare and exceptionally attractive Ancient Roman bronze horse harness junction, featuring a magnificent three-dimensional bull's head surrounded by three substantial circular rings. An impressive example of Roman equestrian equipment, combining practical engineering with powerful military symbolism and remarkable artistic craftsmanship. The centrepiece of this fascinating artefact is the beautifully sculpted head of a bull, distinguished by two prominent, upward-curving horns, carefully modelled eyes, projecting ears and a pronounced muzzle. The striking animal representation gives the entire object an imposing appearance, reflecting the importance of strength, power and prestige in Roman society. Particularly remarkable is the sophisticated arrangement of three robust bronze rings, symmetrically positioned around the central bull's head. This distinctive construction is characteristic of a harness junction or strap distributor, designed to connect and organise multiple leather straps belonging to ancient equestrian equipment. Roman Cavalry – The Equites: During the Roman Imperial Period, cavalry units played an essential role in military operations, undertaking reconnaissance, protecting the flanks of advancing legions, pursuing retreating enemies and delivering rapid attacks across the battlefield. The Roman cavalrymen, known as Equites, relied upon carefully constructed horse harnesses incorporating durable bronze fittings. Such equipment was not merely functional: elaborate decorative elements could also communicate status, military identity and the prestige of the mounted warrior. This remarkable bronze junction belongs to the broader tradition of Roman equestrian harness equipment and represents the type of elaborate metalwork that could have adorned the equipment of mounted soldiers. The Bull – A Powerful Symbol of Roman Military Strength: The bull occupied an important position in Roman religious and military iconography, symbolising strength, courage, virility and formidable physical power. Several Roman legions adopted the bull as their emblem, most famously Legio X Gemina, whose association with the animal reflected the powerful symbolism of Roman military tradition. The incorporation of such an impressive bull's head into an equestrian fitting therefore provides a particularly fascinating connection between Roman craftsmanship, animal symbolism and the martial world of the Empire. An Outstanding Example of Ancient Bronze Craftsmanship: The object is distinguished by its substantial construction, harmonious three-ring arrangement and wonderfully preserved sculptural details. Its attractive ancient surface displays a rich combination of dark brown, blackish and earthy green patination, beautifully highlighting the contours of the bull's face and the powerful curvature of its horns. The reverse retains the characteristic solid construction of the bronze junction, while all three circular openings remain clearly recognisable. The combination of its unusual triple-ring design, expressive animal decoration, impressive preservation and fascinating historical associations makes this a highly desirable collector's piece. A very rare and visually striking example of ancient Roman equestrian bronze craftsmanship, offering a tangible connection to the horses, military traditions and powerful symbolism of the Roman Empire.
