Background Information: Bronze keys, decorative fittings and small household objects formed an important part of everyday life in the Roman Empire. During the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, Roman metalworkers produced a wide variety of practical objects that combined functionality with decorative craftsmanship. Such items were used in domestic environments, workshops, commercial establishments and military settlements throughout the Roman provinces. The principal object in this lot is a bronze key handle decorated with a lion's head, a motif frequently encountered in Roman decorative metalwork. The lion was a familiar symbol of strength, courage and protection in Roman culture, appearing on furniture fittings, architectural ornaments, military equipment and personal accessories. Animal-head terminals were particularly suitable for handles and other functional objects, allowing craftsmen to combine recognisable decorative forms with practical design. Roman keys were used to operate locks on doors, wooden chests, cupboards and storage containers. Locks and keys were important in both private households and commercial settings, where personal belongings, valuables and goods required secure storage. Bronze was commonly used for decorative handles and fittings, while iron was frequently employed for the functional parts of locking mechanisms. The combination of these materials allowed craftsmen to produce objects that were both durable and visually distinctive. The collection also includes several smaller objects and fittings, illustrating the variety of materials and forms encountered among Roman domestic and personal equipment. Small fittings and attachments could serve different purposes, depending on their construction, including use with furniture, containers or other everyday objects. Their manufacture reflects the practical skills of Roman craftsmen and the widespread availability of specialised metalworking techniques. Roman bronze objects were generally manufactured through casting, including the lost-wax technique, followed by filing, polishing and additional finishing. Workshops throughout the Empire produced both standardised functional items and more elaborate decorative pieces. Animal motifs, including lions, dolphins, birds and other creatures, were widely incorporated into Roman metalwork, reflecting artistic traditions shared across different regions of the Empire. During the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, particularly under the Flavian, Trajanic, Hadrianic and Antonine emperors, the Roman Empire maintained extensive commercial and military networks connecting the Mediterranean with its northern provinces. Bronze fittings, keys and household equipment circulated across these routes, reaching regions such as present-day France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. Their distribution reflects the spread of Roman material culture into both urban centres and provincial settlements. This collection offers an interesting insight into Roman craftsmanship and domestic life, with the lion-head key handle illustrating the combination of practical engineering and decorative symbolism characteristic of Roman metalwork. Together, these objects provide a direct and tangible connection to the ancient Roman world, where even small everyday items reflected the technical skills, artistic preferences and practical needs of the people who used them.
