Ancient Large Tuareg Cross Tchimoumene XL - Tahoua Region...

Rare and important Great Tuareg Cross of Tchimoumene (Teneghelt tan Tchimoumene) in high-purity silver (tested, purity estimated at about 900‰). The Tchimoumene Cross takes its name from the homonymous locality situated in the Tahoua Region, in central-western Niger, in the Azawagh pastoral territory, and is one of the twenty-one historic Crosses of Niger. Handcrafted entirely by the Inadan masters, the renowned Tuareg jeweller-smiths, this cross features an elegant geometric silhouette finely pierced and with fins that extend symmetrically along the sides of the central body. The entire surface is finely decorated with dense geometric engravings and traditional hatch marks (tera-tera), executed according to the ancient Tuareg jewelry tradition. According to some interpretations, the cross’s distinctive form symbolically evokes a ceremonial shield, representing protection, strength, and the safeguarding of the family identity during travels across the Sahara. Dating to around the mid-20th century, when these jewels were still made by melting circulating silver coins, producing high-purity alloys whose purity naturally varied from piece to piece. Traditionally these crosses were without a loop and were worn by threading a cord directly through the openings. Origin: Tchimoumene, Tahoua Region, Niger Material: Silver (tested) about 900‰ Dimensions: 9.1 × 5.2 cm Era: Mid-20th century Conditions Excellent condition, with a pleasant patina of time and engravings naturally softened by use. the photos are part of the description Shipping with trackable courier
