No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the object was available from the previous owner. Background Information: Seal rings occupied an important place in the personal and administrative life of the ancient Greek world. Their engraved bezels could be pressed into wax, clay or another suitable sealing material, producing an impression that functioned as a personal mark. Such seals could be associated with the authentication or securing of correspondence, containers and other possessions, while the ring itself remained a wearable object of personal identity. This example is formed from bronze with a relatively slender hoop expanding into an integral oval bezel. The bezel preserves traces of an engraved device, although surface wear and mineral deposits make a precise identification of the motif uncertain. Greek seal rings were produced with a wide range of designs, including human and divine figures, animals, symbols and other individual devices. The imagery could therefore combine practical identification with decorative or symbolic significance. During the Classical and especially the Hellenistic periods, engraved rings formed part of a well-established tradition of personal adornment and glyptic art throughout the Greek world. While precious metals and engraved gemstones were used for more elaborate examples, bronze provided an accessible and durable material for everyday rings. Their production reflects the skills of specialised metalworkers and engravers working within established traditions of small-scale craftsmanship. Greek artistic forms and sealing practices circulated widely around the Mediterranean through trade, migration and cultural interaction. Without a documented archaeological find context, the precise place of manufacture or use of this ring cannot be established. Nevertheless, objects of this type illustrate how personal adornment, identity and practical administration could come together in a single small object. It forms a tangible connection to everyday life in the ancient Greek world, where a seal ring could serve both as a personal possession and as a practical instrument of identification and authentication.
