The pieces show seated figures with caricatured features and great expressive power, with prominent bellies, arms drawn to the chest and, in one specimen, an arm raised suggesting a gesture of performance or stage accompaniment. The volumetric modeling, formal spontaneity and vivid expressions give the set a special appeal, evoking the world of popular entertainment and everyday life in ancient China.
