Amida Nyorai Buddha - Butsudan - Wood

Japan – Gilded wooden Buddha statue in a zushi – Amida Nyorai – 25 cm Special Japanese Buddhist statue of a standing Buddha, Amida Nyorai (Amitabha), placed in a wooden zushi (portable Buddhist shrine) with hinged doors and a gilded interior. The Buddha is depicted standing on a richly decorated, stepped lotus and altar base. The figure has a serene facial expression, a stylized hairstyle, and a long, pleated monk’s robe. The hands are positioned before the body in a religious gesture. Both the statue and the base show remnants of the original gilding. The shrine has two hinged doors with a gilded interior. The gilding shows visible signs of age, dark discolorations and wear, appropriate to the historical character of the object. The combination of the statuary, the richly worked base, and the compact shrine makes this a characterful example of Japanese religious art. Period: Edo (1600-1868) Material: wood, with traces of gilding and painting Dimensions: height 25 cm, width 9.5 cm, depth 9 cm Condition: clear signs of age and use, wear and loss of gilding and painting. The interior and doors show dark discolorations and signs of use. See the photos for an impression of the state. Shipping: The lot will be carefully packaged and shipped insured.
