Dimensions: 14 x 22 cm. Purchased at an auction in a Parisian auction house. Albert Marquet (1875-1947) is a French painter associated with the Fauve movement, although he developed a more restrained style than his contemporaries. A close friend of Henri Matisse, he studied with him at the École des beaux-arts and took part in the 1905 Salon d'Automne. Marquet is best known for his urban and maritime landscapes, often painted from windows or from above, capturing light and atmosphere with great sensitivity. His use of color is more restrained than that of other Fauves, favoring nuanced tones and a structured composition. He traveled across Europe and North Africa, where he produced numerous views of ports, rivers, and coastlines. His work, between tempered Fauvism and poetic realism, is distinguished by a high mastery of light and reflections, notably on water.
