全部拍賣 / Books, Maps & Manuscripts / Al-Hilal - Al-Kitab Al-Dhahabi: 1892–1942 - 1942-1942

"Golden Book" (الكتاب الذهبي) of the famous Egyptian cultural magazine Al-Hilal, published in 1942 by Dar Al-Hilal publishing house. This special commemorative edition marked the 50th anniversary of the magazine's founding (1892–1942). The Golden Book of Al-Hilal (1892-1942) is one of the high points of Arab cultural documentation. In its roughly 160 pages, it gathers essays and chronicles that encyclopedically portray Egypt's transformation over five decades. Great Intellectuals Who Contributed to the Volume The importance of this book lies in the fact that the Dar Al-Hilal publishing house managed to gather the brightest minds of the 20th century for its writing: * Taha Hussein (طه حسين): Known as the "Dean of Arabic Letters." His participation in this edition analyzed the leap in education and critical thought in Egyptian society. * Abbas Mahmoud Al-Akkad (عباس محمود العقاد): One of the most influential historians, philosophers, and poets of modern Egypt, responsible for the sections on literary evolution. * Muhammad Husayn Haykal (محمد حسين هيكل): Renowned writer, journalist, and politician (author of Zaynab, considered the first modern Arabic novel), who contributed his view on sociopolitical development. * Huda Sha'arawi (هدى شعراوي): The greatest pioneer of the feminist movement in Egypt and the Arab world. She wrote specifically about the awakening of rights and the role of women in those fifty years. Historical Themes Covered Through the chronicles of these thinkers and a vast photographic archive of ministers, emirs, and bāyās of the era, the book rigorously documents the birth of modern Egypt: * The Political Awakening and the Occupation: It details Egypt's history under British occupation (1882-1936) and the struggles for independence that led to the era of the Kingdom of Egypt. * The Literary Revolution: How the formats of classical writing gave way to the birth of independent cultural press, the novel, and modern theater. * Social Progress and Infrastructure: Reports on the modernization of the cities (Cairo and Alexandria), the rise of modern universities, and industrial development. A Curious Detail of its Context The book was published in 1361 of the Islamic calendar (1942). It appeared at one of the tensest moments in the region's history: in the midst of World War II. North Africa was a key battlefront and Egypt suffered a severe financial crisis of supplies and paper. The fact that a book with these finishes could be printed in that exact year was considered an editorial miracle and an act of cultural resistance.
