Silver-made pendant with a cabochon carved from agatized fossil wood from Arizona, featuring a particularly evocative and completely natural internal pattern. The stone has a predominantly black background, crossed by veins and irregular bands in shades of red, orange, ochre, cream and gray. The colored areas show wavy and concentric structures reminiscent of small agates formed within the fossil material. During fossilization, the original wood was progressively replaced by silica carried by mineral-rich waters. The organic matter was thus transformed into chalcedony and microcrystalline quartz, preserving part of the arrangement of the ancient vegetal tissue. In this specimen the mineralization is particularly evident due to the presence of areas intensely agatized. The red, orange and brown tones are generally associated with the presence of iron oxides, while the different mineral concentrations contributed to the formation of the complex color design. The cabochon polishing highlights the depth of the colors and the contrast between the dark background and the agatized bands. The silver setting follows the elongated shape of the stone with a simple and elegant line, letting the fossil take a completely protagonist role. A jewel that preserves inside it the geological transformation of an ancient fragment of wood into stone.
