AFTER THE ANTIQUE- A PAIR OF BRONZE MEDICI AND BORGHESE VASES ON GILT BRONZE MOUNTED ORBICULAR DIORITE BASES ITALIAN OR FRENCH, EARLY 19TH CENTURY 41cm high, bases 14cm square The quality of the casting and mounts for these Grand Tour bronzes and the likely costs of the rare Orbicular Diorite marble bases would suggest that they have been made by one of the foremost Italian ateliers such as Valadier or Boschetti. The stone is rare, and mined in Norway, the Urals and Corsica where it was called Corsite and Napoleonite. A pair of gilt bronze mounted Orbicular Diorite vases from the Wrightsman Collection in the Met Museum (object No. 1999.122.1, .2) are catalogued as "possibly Russian, St Petersburg with French mounts". The international business dealings of Italian and French Marchand Merciers of this period supplying the wealthy on the Grand Tour, has meant that the exact origins of works such as this are no longer clear.
