AFTER THE ANTIQUE- A LARGE WHITE MARBLE AND STONE BUST OF A ROMAN MAN POSSIBLY SCIPIO AFRICANUS 18TH CENTURY Depicted facing slightly to his left, swept draped tunic, military style epaulette shoulders, marble head, top of chest, stone shoulders, on marble socle base 90cm high, 72cm wide, base 25cm diameter The physiognomy of this library scale bust is comparable to the 17th century Roman bust of Scipio Africanus in Bigio Morato and statuary marble held in the Galleria Borghese, Paolina Room. However, as Sonja Felici notes, Scipio's later portraits tend to depict him completely bald, with consequent emulation of the earlier portraits of the priests of Isis. The Roman general Scipio earned the surname 'Africanus' after his victory at the Battle of Zama, which ended the Second Punic War in 202 BC.
