After a work by Gabriel Metsu (1629-1667) looted and lost...

- Oil and gouache on thick cardboard. Impeccable resemblance to the original by Metsu that has been lost. - The painting attributed to Gabriel Metsu, historically known as A Sleeping Woman at the Table (or A Sleeping Woman by the Hearth), was part of the prestigious old master art collection of Adolphe Schloss, a wealthy Jewish collector based in Paris. After Schloss’s death in 1910 and his wife Lucie’s in 1938, the set — consisting of more than 300 masterpieces by European painters from the 17th and 18th centuries — came under the custody of his heirs amid a growing antisemitic threat on the eve of the Second World War. With the German invasion of France, the Schloss family’s goods suffered a systematic plunder orchestrated by the authorities of Vichy France and the Nazi regime, which attempted to move and confiscate the canvases clandestinely. Part of the hidden collection was intercepted and transferred to the Jeu de Paume museum in Paris — used as a storage and sorting center for stolen works — before many pieces disappeared in the chaos of the conflict or in the Gestapo basements. We do not know the circumstances in which this copy was made, other than likely from life, as suggested by its impressive quality of detail, but it undoubtedly constitutes an exceptional testimony for the study of disappeared artworks during the great conflict of the 20th century, and the closest remaining link to the vanished Metsu work. - Image dimensions without frame: 18 x 20 cm / 28 x 30 cm with exclusive custom frame. Certain lots, due to their age and value, require an export permit issued by the Ministry of Culture. Although this is an administrative procedure, it is essential to ensure the authenticity of the work and its free circulation internationally. Montbaron Gallery is committed to offering its clients original, unique, and unrepeatable artworks, guaranteeing the authenticity and quality of each piece in our collection. To ensure transparency and trust in every acquisition, we offer a digital Certificate of Guarantee, signed by a certified art historian. The Certificate of Guarantee includes full details about the piece, such as author, date of creation, technique used, and dimensions. The digital Certificate of Guarantee will be issued at the client’s request, providing an official reference for the piece purchased. This document will be sent in digital format and will be signed by a gallery art historian, ensuring its validity and backing. We are committed to client satisfaction and confidence, so any questions about the authenticity or condition of the work will be addressed professionally and diligently. To request your Certificate of Guarantee, please contact us through our usual channels. To that end, we work with a network of professionals specialized in art transport, who guarantee the utmost care throughout the process. It is important to note that the shipping costs shown in the listing are indicative and subject to modification depending on various circumstances, including fluctuations in transportation market rates, changes in delivery location, the size and weight of the work, and potential extraordinary circumstances such as fuel cost fluctuations or adjustments to customs and import tariffs. The final shipping cost will be calculated precisely based on these factors, and the client will always be informed beforehand before proceeding with shipment. Our goal is to offer the best possible service, tailored to each client’s needs and ensuring the work reaches its destination quickly and safely, with no surprises. The frame shown in the previous images has been added to the work by a third party or by the seller, and thus is not an integral part of the object. This frame is provided at no additional cost so that, when the work arrives at your home, it can be displayed immediately on your wall. Accordingly, no damages to the frame that do not affect the integrity of the work will be accepted as a valid reason to file a complaint or request a cancellation.
