Three original artworks from Æ’s Japanese Heroes Series, reimagining Pikachu as a wandering samurai within atmospheric Japanese landscapes of cherry blossoms, temples, mist-covered mountains and Mount Fuji. Inspired by the visual language of traditional Japanese printmaking, the three compositions combine Æ’s characteristic monochrome aesthetic with deep blacks, distressed ink textures and delicate natural details. Pikachu appears as a small samurai sentinel travelling through monumental landscapes, creating a playful contrast between an iconic contemporary character and the timeless atmosphere of historical Japan. Artist and designer Æ holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Digital Design and Multimedia Technologies (Barcelona, 2004) and a Bachelor’s Degree in East Asian Studies. Deeply influenced by Japanese visual culture, ukiyo-e printmaking, manga, video games and conceptual art, he has spent decades developing a distinctive monochromatic visual language inspired by 1980s computer graphics, skateboard graphics and independent zine aesthetics. His hand-finished mixed-media artworks reinterpret iconic characters through the expressive vocabulary of Japanese poster and print design, combining contemporary graphic composition with analogue artistic techniques. His works are held in private collections in more than 30 countries, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Æ’s work is characterized by bold black-and-white compositions, distressed textures and a restrained visual vocabulary combining Japanese iconography, symbolic landscapes and recognizable figures. Strong contrasts and layered textures give the works the appearance of rediscovered prints while exploring the intersection of nostalgia, mythology and contemporary visual culture. In “Sakura Samurai · Sacred Mountains,” Pikachu is transformed into a solitary samurai traveller moving through an imagined Japan. Cherry blossoms, traditional architecture, distant peaks and Mount Fuji surround the small armored figure, creating three complementary scenes that balance intimacy with monumental landscape. Displayed together, the works form a poetic journey through a Japan suspended somewhere between history, memory and fantasy.
