Life and work Adriaan Hilleveld was the son of the Amsterdam art dealer Hendrik Hilleveld (1801-1859) and Elisabeth Wiegel (1806-1876). He began painting lessons at age five with Valentijn Bing and later with Abraham Hulk Sr.[4] He was fifteen when, in May 1853, he debuted as an exhibitor at the Exposition of Living Masters in The Hague. He then participated in exhibitions in The Hague, Amsterdam, and Leeuwarden until the early 1860s.[3] He mainly painted beach and sea views. After the death of his father, he lived briefly in Utrecht, until in 1861 he moved with his mother and sisters to Rotterdam. Four years later he left for the Dutch East Indies, where he served as adjutant-officer with the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army. He was a drawing teacher at the Military Pupillage School.[5] Hilleveld committed suicide at age 39 in a kampong near Gombong. The painting is carefully packed and sent by registered mail.
