A Very Large Format Martian Stereoscopic Panorama

Vintage chromogenic print on resin coated Kodak paper. Exceptionally rare giant print of a panorama from the Mars Exploration Rover mission, designed to be viewed through 3D glasses. This startlingly immersive image was created as part of NASA’s 15-year Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission. The 3D anaglyph presentation (designed to be viewed through 3D glasses) is an accurate representation of the way the Opportunity and Spirit rovers viewed the Martian landscape, with two sets of two cameras allowing for 3-dimensional imaging. This image was taken on the panoramic cameras (Pancam) and depicts a nearly unobstructed view of the Martian landscape, interrupted only by the rover’s low gain antenna (only visible on the blue channel). A variety of Martian rocks are visible, ranging from tiny pebbles to immense boulders, reflecting the first objective of the rover’s mission: to analyze Martian rocks for evidence of past water on the surface. Behind the foreground terrain, a seemingly endless flat expanse of Mars’s desert rolls on to the horizon. The immensity of this landscape makes the rover’s tracks tracing their way up the hillside all the more striking reminders of human ingenuity. Spirit and Opportunity were twin rovers built to a near identical design and sent to Mars in 2003. They conducted experiments and exploration for far longer than had been initially expected, surviving until 2010 and 2018 respectively.
