A rare large Chinese blue and white dish Yongle (1403-1424)

finely potted with gently rounded sides rising from a low tapered foot to a broad, everted rim, painted on the inside in rich tones of underglaze cobalt, enhanced with pronounced heaping and piling, with an elegantly arranged flowering peony spray, issuing two fully opened blooms together with smaller buds amongst scrolling, serrated leaves, enclosed by a double-line border and encircled on the incurved well by a continuous peony meander with a narrow band of classic scroll to the rim, the underside further decorated with scrolling lotus, the recessed base unglazed in a pale orange tone, 37.8cm diameter, The present dish belongs to an important group of large blue and white dishes produced at Jingdezhen during the Yongle reign, characterized by their well-potted forms, strong cobalt decoration and fluent brushwork. The centrally placed peony spray is arranged with considerable balance, the blossoms and foliage extending across the broad interior while retaining a pleasing sense of open space.
