A GILTWOOD, BRESCIA AFRICANA, CIPPOLINO AND BRESCIA DI SPAGNA SIDE

A GILTWOOD, BRESCIA AFRICANA, CIPPOLINO AND BRESCIA DI SPAGNA SIDE TABLE ITALIAN, SECOND QUARTER 18TH CENTURY The strapwork and lozenge marble top above an acanthus carved frieze on caryatid legs headed by masks and terminating in paw feet 82cm high, 128cm wide, 69cm deep Condition Report: Generally good, structurally secure with wear and tear consistent with age and use. There are dents marks and scratches and shrinkage cracks. There is general wear to the gilding with some red bole exposed on leading edges and angles, there are chips and flaking along joint lines, some minor losses including to the tip of one of the palm leaves forming the apron, and there are some local repairs including to large parts of the foliate apron. Re-gilt. The insides of the rails applied with a pale yellow clay wash. The wood corner blocks apparently original and the centre strut possibly original, there are later metal corner struts, probably early 20th century. Originally with a stretcher between the legs, there are visible lines of the cut joints on the inner-facing surfaces of the square blocks at the ankles and associated visible pegging which would have secured the joints. The marble in good order with some natural cracks visible in the surface and minor edge nibbles, with a metal bar visible in the underside running side to side, this presumably added for support. Overall a good looking table and an attractive marble top.
