Yoruba Bead Sculpture - Osogbo Region, Nigeria The figurative group depicts a rider on a horse completely covered in glass beads. Both animal and human are almost entirely detached from their basic material structure by dense, color-coded bead networks. Green dominates the horse's body, while blue, red, white, and black accentuate the towering figure. Particularly striking is its wide, horn-like headdress. A long, blue and red staff connects the rider's vertical form to the base. Bead necklaces, textile elements, and varying surface textures enhance the precious, almost ceremonial appearance. In Yoruba art, beadwork is closely associated with sacred and political authority; significant royal beadwork has also been documented for the Osogbo region. The equestrian motif, in turn, traditionally represents rank, leadership, and power. Comparable bead-adorned equestrian figures are associated with rulers and deities; some examples can also be attributed to Èṣù (the Yoruba people) based on specific attributes.
